DATA MODUL is expanding its display portfolio with 13.3-inch e-paper displays featuring an integrated front light. Developed in-house, the new solution combines the excellent readability of reflective e-paper technology with an integrated front-light system and enhanced protective features, addressing the growing demand for energy-efficient, durable and environmentally responsible display solutions.

Energy efficiency as a key enabler for green city concepts and smart infrastructure 

Compared to conventional TFT displays, e-paper technology offers exceptionally low power consumption, as it uses ambient light to display content and does not require a continuously active backlight. This makes e-paper particularly relevant for uses aligned with green thinking, green city concepts and sustainable public procurement, where environmental criteria are becoming increasingly important.

E-paper displays are an ideal choice wherever paper-based information is being replaced, and content needs to remain clearly legible around the clock – in daylight as well as at night. “For users, it is essential that information remains continuously visible while keeping energy consumption as low as possible – this is exactly where e-paper displays deliver clear advantages,” emphazises CEO Dr Florian Pesahl.

Key features of the new e-paper display solution

Reflective e-paper technology ensures excellent readability, even in very bright ambient conditions. The integrated front light also enables clear visibility in low-light or dark environments. For use in demanding environments, the display features optically bonded cover glass with integrated UV and IR filtering. This provides reliable protection while maintaining strong optical performance.

New possibilities for autonomous outdoor solutions

Thanks to their minimal power requirements, the displays support independent system designs, for example when combined with solar panels or battery operation. This opens new possibilities for deployment in locations without access to existing power infrastructure. Designed specifically for outdoor use, e-paper technology is ideal for long-life, low-maintenance information systems in public spaces, such as transport stops, urban environments or industrial sites.

With this solution, we further strengthen our position as a system partner for customised display solutions. In addition to display integration, the company offers tailored adaptations, including cover glass design, colour temperature tuning, mechanical integration and the addition of further sensors, such as ambient light sensors (ALS).
