DATA MODUL among Germany’s Top 10 most innovative SMEs
DATA MODUL is expanding its optical bonding portfolio with new acrylic- and silicone-based SCA (Solid Clear Adhesive) materials. Its well-established gel bonding process has traditionally used polyurethane gel, particularly for smaller displays with no frame or very narrow bezels. The new materials now enable efficient optical bonding of medium and large display sizes, opening up new possibilities for large-format applications in markets such as gaming.
Modern display generations are becoming increasingly sensitive to mechanical stress and strain. Particularly with large display sizes, material-related shrinkage of acrylic-based liquid adhesives can increase mechanical stress and raise the risk of Mura effects. Compared with liquid adhesive systems, the new SCA materials offer cost advantages and simplify the bonding process. At the same time, they extend the possibilities of gel bonding to larger display formats.
Depending on display size, environmental conditions and project-specific requirements, we use different gel materials:
Despite the extended possibilities offered by gel bonding, LOCA (Liquid Optical Clear Adhesive) technology continues to play an important role for us at DATA MODUL. It is used primarily for displays where a larger gap between the polarizer and frame needs to be compensated for, as well as for optical bonding of hard-to-hard connections between glass and glass-based touch sensors using SITO or DITO technology.
“By adding acrylic- and silicone-based SCA materials to our portfolio, we can address a wider range of display sizes, operating environments and design requirements. At the same time, LOCA remains an important technology for specific specific bonding needs. Customers benefit from greater design flexibility and the ability to select the right material and bonding technology that best fits their application,” says Manfred Steber, Head of Products (Cover Lens/ Bonding/ Sensors) at DATA MODUL.
Across all material types, optical bonding improves image quality by reducing reflection losses, increasing contrast and perceived brightness, and creating a uniform, dark black-panel appearance when the display is switched off. At the same time, the full-surface bond protects against dust and moisture and increases resistance to shocks and vibrations.
Full optical bonding has therefore become an established standard for numerous display applications and is considered at an early stage in many new product developments. With its broad portfolio of gel and liquid adhesive systems, DATA MODUL can address a wide range of display sizes, operating conditions and design requirements, providing the basis for application- and market-specific optical bonding solutions.
