Last Saturday, we showed our sporting commitment and combined our involvement with a good cause: With our ambitious colleagues, we took to the starting line of the 17th Münchner-Kindl-Lauf! The starting signal was given at the idyllic Seestadl in Munich's English Garden, where we took part in a 5 or 10 kilometre run.
Equipped with DATA MODUL sports outfits and a portion of ambition, our athletic commitment went beyond pure sporting competition: each registration supported the Munich Outpatient Children's Hospice by donating part of the registration fee to the institution, which cares for families with a terminally or seriously ill child or parent. We already made a Christmas donation to this organisation last year, and we are delighted that our running fever is also doing something good.
A big thank you to everyone who took part! We are already looking forward to the next event together!
Sunlight-readable, robust displays for outdoor use
We are pleased to introduce the new 7" TFT display from Toppan/Ortustech, which is based on the advanced Blanview-F technology and the proven Blanview technology. Specially designed for use in demanding environments, this product offers outstanding outdoor readability combined with low power consumption and high robustness.
The COM79H7M53FLC is characterised by a contrast ratio of 1000:1, a brightness of 600 cd/m² and a wide viewing angle of 88° from all directions. With an LED backlight lifetime of 50,000 hours and a vibration resistance of up to 6.8G, it is ideal for various outdoor industrial applications, including agriculture, e-mobility, mobile and battery-powered devices as well as heavy-duty applications.
In addition to this product, we present two other 7" models, the COM70H7M24ULC and the COM70H7M40ULC. These TFTs are based on VA technology and offer even lower power consumption.
Portfolio expansion: A2 colour e-paper display from Sharp
We are pleased to introduce our new 28.5 inch A2 colour e-paper display from Sharp. This innovative display offers over 65,000 colours thanks to the latest Spectra6 technology from E Ink. Its resolution of 3060 x 2160 pixels and extended temperature range of 0° to 50°C make it ideal for retail, indoor signage, digital out-of-home advertisements (DOOH), restaurant displays and smart city applications.
The slim and lightweight design of the Sharp A2 colour e-paper display makes it the perfect choice for customers looking for scalable and customisable solutions. The narrow bezel allows for seamless multiple displays. The e-paper technology also makes it extremely energy efficient, as power is only required when changing images. The Sharp A2 colour e-paper display is available immediately and is expected to go into series production in the middle of the year. Further products in poster size (A1: 40.5 inches and A0: 57.3 inches) are planned for the future.
We are pleased to introduce an extended range of small e-paper displays from 1.54 inches from DKE. These are now available in a 4-colour version (black/white/red/yellow) as standard, offering improved flexibility in the colour design of content. The additional combination of red and yellow opens up new possibilities for displaying information in applications where small e-paper displays are typically used, such as electronic shelf labelling.
The displays offer an extremely wide viewing angle, a temperature range of 0° to +40°C and a high DPI rate. As e-paper displays only require power to change the image, they are extremely energy-efficient. Thanks to their reflective properties and always-on mode, the image content always remains clearly legible.
3.5-inch HMI unit for professional coffee machines
We are pleased to announce the successful development of a customised 3.5-inch Human Machine Interface (HMI) unit that we developed specifically for a coffee machine manufacturer. The development was carried out in close co-operation with the customer, taking into account specific design requirements and cost considerations.
The HMI unit is based on a cost-efficient STM32 (Cortex M7) based embedded board and offers an intuitive user interface that ensures seamless integration into existing systems. The high-resolution 3.5-inch TFT display with IPS Wide View Technology guarantees brilliant colours and a brightness of 700cd. The black panel effect is enhanced by the applied full bonding process, which ensures an appealing aesthetic.
This project underlines our expertise in the development of customised solutions for kitchen appliances such as coffee machines and at the same time demonstrates the successful combination of technical requirements and economic efficiency to create innovative products of the highest quality.
Keynotes at this year's electronic displays conference
We will be presenting two exciting keynotes at this year's electronic displays conference in Nuremberg.
On 10 April from 2:55 to 3:15pm, Andreas Huber, Head of Business Development from DATA MODUL, will talk about the advantages of e-Paper displays, especially outdoors, in his keynote "e-Paper for Outdoor Usage" and will address challenges such as increased temperatures, UV resistance and lighting, with a special focus on the optical bonding of the frontlight.
On 11 April, Claus Vogt, Head of Products & Markets - Display from DATA MODUL, will present the keynote "Transparent Displays" from 3:05 to 3:25pm. This will cover the technological differences compared to classic OLED displays, advantages and disadvantages as well as application scenarios for transparent displays in HMIs, monitors or in the digital signage market.
The electronic displays conference takes place from 10 to 11 April and offers an excellent platform for professional exchange on the latest developments in display technology.
At DATA MODUL, we see sustainability as the basis for future-oriented action that aligns economic considerations and ecological aspects. Our sustainability efforts are focussed on several levels: we are currently determining our corporate carbon footprint (CCF), developing a comprehensive global sustainability strategy and improving our products in terms of energy efficiency and the use of alternative materials. Based on this conviction, we organize also corporate volunteering projects that bring together employees from different departments. One example is our partnership with Bergwald e.V., where we recently made a small contribution to climate adaptation of local forest ecosystems for the second time since 2022 by planting 1,000 trees this time thanks to the dedicated efforts of 20 employees from the Weikersheim site.

E-Paper signage solution for Green Beetle Restaurant
We are delighted to announce the successful integration of our e-paper signage solution at the renowned Green Beetle – a vegan fine dining restaurant in Munich that is clearly committed to sustainability.
Instead of the manually written chalkboard, daily information accompanying the menu is now displayed digitally in colours that perfectly match the interior design. Our partner congatec presents the latest Computer-on-Modules (COMs) with 13th generation Intel Core processors. These modules offer impressive performance and are fully compatible with their predecessors. With Thunderbolt, USB 3.2 ports and advanced PCIe support up to Gen5, the COM-HPC modules enable increased data throughput, improved I/O bandwidth and higher power density. The COM Express 3.1 compliant modules offer upgrade options with PCIe Gen4 support and facilitate mass production of OEM designs. Thanks to this technology, the TFT display can now be read optimally even in direct sunlight with an LED illumination of only 400 cd/m², while the power consumption remains comparatively low. With a resolution of 640 x 960 dots and a contrast ratio of 700:1, the new TFT display delivers razor-sharp and brilliant images. It is ideal for medical applications, battery-powered devices, mobile applications and various outdoor applications.
It features an extended temperature range of -20 to +70 °C and an LED lifetime of around 70,000 hours. The display is available in portrait mode and has a viewing angle of 80°/80°/80°.
Did you know that we offer an innovative voice control for industrial HMI applications that enables touch-free control of machines and devices?
Especially in situations where operators do not have a hand free to touch a device, our voice control offers an efficient and convenient solution. It can be used both online and offline. In offline mode, a limited set of commands is available, allowing the user to perform the most important functions of the device by voice command. The microphone is configured to filter out ambient noise and recognise only the user's voice, providing excellent handling. The system can be connected via a 5V or 3.3V power supply as well as via line-in or USB audio connection and can be connected to our i.MX8Mm SBC.
At this year's Embedded World in Nuremberg, we presented an impressive demo that clearly demonstrated the advantages of voice control. With the help of keywords such as "set colour to" and "green", an LED strip could be controlled and its colour adjusted. The microphone had a selective effect and could clearly recognise the user's voice despite strong ambient noise. Our voice control offers great potential for touchless control of signage and POS/POI applications, as well as for controlling machines and devices in industrial environments.

We now offer the option to use the in-house developed maXcs software with the standard web browsers on numerous signage monitors. Airports in Singapore, Hong Kong and Stuttgart or at other facilities such as amusement parks are already successfully working with the software. Customers can now also use conventional web browsers to display text, images and videos. The maXcs software includes numerous key features and enables customers to implement projects cost-efficiently and flexibly without being bound to a specific hardware determined by the manufacturer.
“The enhancement of our maXcs software by browser-based content display is an important step for us to offer our customers even more flexibility. This opens up new possibilities for the implementation of projects, in particular for customers in the retail, airport, transport and digital signage sectors”, explains Kevin Schmidt, Product Manager Signage Division.
Discover the features of our Ambient Light Sensor Board, which automatically adjusts the brightness of the display to the ambient light conditions. This not only extends the lifetime of the display, but also saves energy.
The sensor detects light in the spectrum of the human eye and is perfectly suited for applications such as self-check-in/check-out, user recognition and access authorization or for successful queue management e.g. in retail. The board is designed to work with our proprietary eMotion NT scaler boards and features a high-sensitivity, low-power light sensor technology with I²C interface. It offers excellent IR and UV rejection, as well as integrated 50/60Hz noise suppression. The measured light intensity is used to adjust the display brightness. The board features a wide temperature range and can be modified and customized upon customer request.
New products from congatec with SystemReady-IR certification
Our partner congatec has received SystemReady IR certification for its SMARC Computer-on-Modules based on NXP i.MX 8M Plus processor technology.
This IR certification from ARM ensures that edge devices meet certain hardware and firmware requirements to guarantee trouble-free operation of commercial and community operating systems. Customers who purchase these certified products benefit from improved compatibility, lower development and certification costs, more system choices and easier time to market.
Standardized firmware interfaces also reduce maintenance costs.
Presentations at the electronic displays conference
The electronic displays conference in Nuremberg will be starting shortly, and DATA MODUL will once again be represented there with two exciting keynotes.
On 15 March from 2:00 to 2:20, Robert Meier, Product Manager at DATA MODUL's Industrial Division, will give a presentation on "Challenge accepted: Handheld Devices for Industrial Usage", in which he will explain the specific requirements that handheld devices must meet in industrial environments.
On 16 March from 09:10 to 09:30, Claus Vogt, Head of Display Solutions at DATA MODUL, will give a presentation entitled "E-Paper and Art-Displays: Paper Goes Digital". He will present the functionality, advantages and disadvantages as well as application examples of E-paper and art displays.
The electronic displays conference is an annual event for display technology and will take place from 15 to 16 March in Nuremberg. It offers a platform for exchange, networking and presentations on the latest developments in display technology.
We are expanding our product portfolio from the Narrow Bezel series with new monitors optimised for Reaction To Fire in sizes 32, 43, 49 and 55 inches. The monitors are tested in accordance with DIN EN 13823 and, based on the results obtained, can be classified in Reaction To Fire class A2-s1, d0 in accordance with DIN EN 13501. According to this, the monitors are classified as "non-combustible" and can also be used in escape and rescue routes according to building regulations.
In Q2, first samples of a new 8" TFT display from Sharp will be available. The LQ080Y3LW01A has a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, a brightness of 650 cd/m2 and can be read perfectly from any angle thanks to the viewing angle of 80° (L/R/U/D).
Display Product of the Year award for transparent OLED display

Soon available: new WVGA display with AHVA technology
A new 7" WVGA display from AUO which is ideal for industrial HMI applications will soon be available. Thanks to Advanced Hyper-Viewing Angle (AHVA) technology, which is comparable to IPS, it features an extremely wide viewing angle of 89° (L/R/U/D), making it easy to read from any direction.
The new display with the designation G070VW01 V012 has an LVDS interface, has a brightness of 400 nits, and can be used in an operating temperature range from -30 °C to +85 °C. The first samples are expected to be available at the end of December/beginning of January 2023.
We have three new server-on-module families from our partner Congatec in our portfolio. The x86-based COM-HPC server modules in sizes E and D as well as the COM Express Type 7 modules are based on the latest Intel Xeon D processors (codename: Ice Lake D) and, thanks to their extended temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C, are particularly well suited for a wide range of industrial, outdoor and IoT applications, but also for use in edge computing and transportation.
The new x86 COM-HPC server-on-modules have up to 20 available cores and enable an enormously high memory bandwidth with up to 8 RAM sockets, which is essential for server workloads. In addition, the server modules have TCC/TSN-based real-time Ethernet.
